Job Duties:

Crops/Commodities: trees and nursery stock. Prune all types and varieties of deciduous and conifer trees, which requires climbing ladders. Workers will harvest or dig trees which requires working on their feet and on hands and knees all day. Workers will spread herbicides and insecticides with a back sprayer weighing 60 pounds. Workers will repeatedly lift and carry materials weighing up to 60 pounds during the course of the day. Workers will take inventory and grade plants, prepare trees and shrubs for digging by tying or wrapping as necessary; wrap burlap or other covering around root balls and secure with twine and/or staples; crimp wire baskets; lift, carry and load nursery stock and trees onto trucks for transport; and unload, move or load supplies, including wire baskets. Hand dig (with shovel) nursery stock and trees. Prepare fields for planting by clearing cull stock, brush and debris; plant seedlings or ‘liners' by hand (including riding and inserting liners in a mechanical planter); load, unload or transplant bare-root nursery stock; straighten, tie, prune and shear trees and shrubs; cut, pull or remove and mow weeds or grass; move irrigation equipment; and apply fertilizer. Workers need to be able to drum lace ball and burlap trees and shrubs. Mechanized tree spade helpers will work as part of a crew, remove the tree from the tree spade, tighten the burlap in an acceptable manner, crimp wire basket around the root ball, lace top of ball with sisal twine and crimp basket to tighten twine. Work is to be done in the field for long periods of time. Workers may assist in loading trucks with nursery products weighing up to and including 60 pounds and lifting to a height of 5 feet. Work will also include heavy mechanized field work using power equipment. By way of example and not limitation power equipment may include tree spades, power shears, chain saws, high lift and fork lift, tractors, planters, and sprayers. Workers will be expected to operate and maintain agricultural equipment with or without direction. Workers should be able to work on their feet in bent positions for long periods of time. Work requires repetitive movements and extensive walking. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, insect spray, related chemicals, etc. may affect workers' ability to perform the job. Workers are exposed to wet weather early in the morning through the heat of the day, working in fields. Temperatures may range from 10 to 100 F. Workers may be required to work during occasional showers not severe enough to stop field operations. Persons seeking employment as experienced Nursery Worker must be available for the entire period requested by the employer. Employer may request, but not require, workers to work more than the stated daily hours and/or on a worker's Sabbath or federal holidays. Worker must report to work at designated time and place each day. Daily or weekly work schedule may vary due to weather, sunlight, temperature, crop conditions, and other factors. Employer will notify workers of any change to start time. Workers will have an unpaid lunch break. TERMINATION. Prior to any termination for cause, employer evaluates workers' performance of required tasks and compliance with Work Rules and other employer policies. Employer may terminate a worker for cause if the worker's performance consistently and/or substantially fails to satisfy the employer's reasonable expectations (in accordance with the criteria set forth herein), or otherwise engages in serious or egregious misconduct that endangers health, safety, or property.

Special Requirements:

This job requires a minimum of three months of prior experience working on a tree farm, preferably with extensive ball and burlap (B&B) field harvesting, handling both manual and machine tasks associated with commodity production and harvest activities. Applicants must be able to furnish verbal or written statement establishing relevant prior work experience. Workers must be able to perform manual as well as mechanized activities with accuracy and efficiency. Saturday work required. Must be able to lift/carry 60 lbs. Employer-paid post-hire random, upon suspicion and post-accident drug and alcohol testing is also required.
