- Job Duties:
- Operate machinery (approx. 80%) or manually (approx. 20%); prepare fields; plant, cultivate, and harvest blueberries, corn, cotton, tobacco, peanuts. Mechanically cultivate blueberry fields. Operate, repair and maintain farm vehicles and equipment. Loan seed hoppers. Cover harvested peanuts with tarps. Carry supplies including bags, baling wire to fields. Set plants in rows. Transplant or replant tobacco as needed. Take care to prevent bruising/breaking plants. Remove tops, flowers, and suckers on tobacco. Pull mature tobacco leaves from stalks based on position and leaf color. Place leaves on conveyor belt. Pack leaves for transport to tobacco barns for curing. Loading/unloading tobacco barns. Assemble/maintain shade tents. Install/maintain irrigation systems/water lines. Move/install irrigation pipes and equipment. Dig/maintain ditches. Apply pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and other crop protectants. Apply fertilizers, plant growth chemicals, conditioners, and other plant related treatments at correct times depending on plant type, growth, climate/crop conditions. Mow, cut, and weed fields. Prepare and/or clear land for planting using mechanized or hand equipment to remove trash, rocks/debris that may interfere with planting/harvesting activities. Level land by moving dirt and other materials. Load/unload product and supplies/materials. Stack/unstack pallets. Equipment may include: tractors, trucks, dozers, planters, mowers, plows, sprayers, cultivators, forklifts, power shears, chainsaws, bobcats, skid loaders, high lifts, and/or other vehicles. Manipulate controls to set, activate/adjust mechanisms on machinery. Adjust speeds of cutters, blowers, conveyors, and height of cutting head. Clean, adjust, repair and perform routine service on equipment (e.g., lubricating grease points, inspecting/maintaining fluid levels, checking belt/conveyor tensions, and maintaining tires, wheels, bearings, belts, and other wear parts). Repair/replace defective parts. Attach farm implements (e.g., plows, harrows, discs, sprayers) using hand tools. Assist with general farm maintenance/repairs. Use hand tools including but not limited to rakes, hoes, mattocks, brush hooks and/or axes, shovels, shears, clippers, loppers and saws. Lift, carry, and load/unload products/supplies. Clean/maintain work areas, vehicles, fences, buildings, equipment. Loading, shipping, hauling product/supplies. Maintenance of grain bins. As a minor activity, if needed, workers may assist with feeding/general maintenance of cattle. Workers will drive vehicles for transporting workers, goods, or commodities on company business.
