Job Duties:
Field Workers (Apples, Sweet Cherries, and Pears) to perform the following duties: The worker will hand harvest fruits,(Apple and pear only) this can be performed from a motorized platform (When asked by the supervisor, worker will operate the motorized platform) and/or from the ground or a ladder. The worker will attach harness, bucket or bag and picks low hanging fruit by hand or using clippers while standing on the ground and higher branches while standing on a ladder. The worker will pick according to grade, color and size by grasping fruit with the hands and removing from the tree in a motion so as not to harm adjacent buds on the tree branches. Worker will carry harness, bucket or bag of up to 60 lbs. and will place fruit into plastic or wooden bins, 4’x4’x2’ which hold approximately 23 bushels of fruit. Care must be exercised at all times to prevent bruising fruit or breaking of branches. Some workers may be required to examine harvested fruit in bins and sort out any fruit not meeting the grade, color, and size specifications. The worker must possess the ability to pick-up and handle a 10 ft. or 12 ft. orchard ladder weighing up to 40 pounds. Prepare land for agriculture use by digging, raking, and screening for planting in cold frames and hot beds. Plant crops, trees, or other plants, and perform tasks such as spraying, weeding, fertilizing, and watering using agricultural, horticultural, and hand tools. Tie and bunch trees and wrap their roots for efficient handling. Walk beside or ride on planting machines, inserting plants at specified intervals. Assemble, line, and pad cartons, crates, and containers. Hand thinning of fruit trees to ensure proper fruit load on trees. Load and unload crops or containers manually or with equipment. Manipulate controls to operate machinery, operate conveyors, and other material moving equipment, and manage various agricultural production equipment like irrigation systems, self-propelled machinery, forklifts, tractors, and tractor-drawn machinery for activities like planting, fertilizing, and spraying, plowing, harrowing, fertilizing, cultivating, harvesting. Use forklifts, transfer augers, suction gates, shovels, or pitchforks to load hoppers, containers, or conveyors for machine feeding and processing. Load agricultural or forestry products for shipment using conveyors, hand trucks, forklifts, or transfer augers. Much of the picking, thinning, pruning, and other orchard work will be done from an aluminum ladder up to 12-feet in height such as identifying pests and disease. Examine and classify living organisms based on characteristics or behavior. Detect insect or disease presence by feeling plants’ leaves and noting their coloring. Maintain inventories of materials, equipment, or products, and order materials as required.

Minimum Job Qualifications: 3 months of fruit tree agricultural experience (or in any of the commodities listed). Specific requirements include lifting up to 60 pounds frequently and able to use hand tools, including cutting knives. Must be able to work under conditions where skin and clothing become heavily soiled with mud, water, grease, etc. Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions, including rain, cold, high winds, etc. Work involves frequent bending and working in bent or stooped positions. Must be able to walk and stand up extensively. No smoking, alcohol, firearms in the field or residential housing. Workers that want to be drivers must possess a valid drivers license. The drivers license is not a pre-hire job requirement. A commercial drivers license is NOT required.
