- Job Duties:
- Workers are needed for seasonal catfish hatchery during the spawning season to work rotating 8 hour shifts to provide 24 hour care. Shifts are from approximately 7am to 4pm, 4pm to 12am, 12am to 7am with two workers per shift. During this time workers will perform the following:
1. Round-the-Clock Care: Collaborating with the team to provide continuous care for eggs and fish fry (Larval fish live off a yolk sac attached to their bodies. When the yolk sac is fully absorbed, the young fish are called fry.) are in the hatchery. Employees will be asked to monitor the eggs and fry for any sign of disease or stress. The hatchery is staffed around the clock to make sure that the fish are always under a watchful eye. Oxygen monitoring as well as temperature monitoring using hand held devices are crucial to fry development.
2. Tank Maintenance: Disinfecting and cleaning tanks with hand brooms, brushes and disinfecting agents, to maintain optimal water quality and a healthy environment for the fish. Tanks must be dried and fully sanitized between egg masses. The other implements must also be sanitized regularly.
3. Sampling: Taking regular samples of water and fish populations for quality control and data analysis. Dead or diseased individuals or egg clutches must be removed before that disease has the ability to spread to other fry.
4. Moving eggs and fry: As the eggs and fry meet certain benchmarks they are moved from place to place inside the hatchery using hand pump siphons and buckets. When this is done it must be done with care and documentation.
5. Feeding Fish: Ensuring that fish receive appropriate and timely feeding to support their growth and development.
6. Fish Weighing: Accurately weighing fish at various stages of growth for record-keeping and analysis.
7. General Hatchery Duties: Performing all other necessary tasks related to hatchery operations, as assigned by the supervisor.
Drug screens will be performed randomly, upon incident, accident, or suspicion. Failure or refusal of a drug screen is grounds for immediate termination. Workers found to be negligent of fry or duties will be terminated immediately. Workers will work indoors and outdoors, in various weather conditions, 3 months of verifiable fishery/hatchery or related aquatic experience required.
Seining: Routine harvesting of fingerlings and broodfish from ponds with seine nets. Work involves working with seine reels, seine boats, boom trucks, and tractors as capabilities and needs dictate. Individuals will assist in the safe loading of trucks with fingerlings for transport to food fish farms as well as transport of fingerlings within and between company ponds in Inverness, MS. Workers will assist in pond clean-outs and consolidation of both broodfish and fingerlings.
Farm maintenance: Workers will assist in general farm maintenance including road work (spreading gravel, road grading etc), pond work (draining or filling ponds, discing pond bottoms, etc), routine tractor maintenance (oil changes, air filters etc.), repair and maintenance of paddlewheels and oxygen buoys, grass-cutting (mowing, bush-hogging, weed-eating) and safe application of chemicals to treat aquatic and terrestrial weeds and nuisance species and maintain optimal water quality, as well as assisting in general repairs and maintenance of facility structures and systems (hatchery, sheds, offices etc).
Feeding: Safe operation of feed trucks around ponds to distribute fish feeds of various sizes once or twice per day across the ponds. Workers will need understand management feeing plan, execute the plan and record feed amounts/responses.
To complete these tasks, workers must be comfortable in working in and out of the water in a wide range of temperature and weather conditions.
