Farm & Orchard Work: Strawberries, blueberries, peaches, cucumbers, garlic, tomato, squash, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, okra, citrus, eggplant, peppers, pecans, watermelon and cantaloupe..
Perform manual labor to transplant, plant, cultivate, prune, string, stake, harvest, load, unload, grade, sort, and pack strawberries, blueberries, peaches, cucumbers, garlic, tomato, squash, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, okra, citrus, eggplant, peppers, pecans, watermelon and cantaloupe by hand or machine. Work requires using hand tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears and knives. Duties include watering, fertilizing, potting and labeling trees. Weed and thin crops. Dig, cut and transplant seedlings, cuttings and trees. Move containers. Haul and spread topsoil, fertilizer, peat moss and other materials to condition soil using wheelbarrows, carts and shovels. Dig, rake, screen and till soil. Clean and graft plants and trees onto different rootstock. Set up and repair irrigation equipment. Clear and maintain irrigation ditches. Operate and maintain farm vehicles and equipment. Workers with licenses may drive transportation vehicles to transport workers and may be offered additional work hours. Clean work areas. Maintain buildings, grounds and landscaping. Cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage and strawberries are graded and sorted in the field according to factors such as color, species, length, width, appearance, feel, smell, and quality to ensure correct processing and usage. Inferior or defective products and foreign matter will be discarded and acceptable products will be placed in containers for further processing. Place products into containers and mark grades on containers. Move products to specified areas such as loading docks. Materials and products will be loaded onto pallets and into trucks. Cartons, crates and containers will be assembled using hand tools. Proper spacing as instructed is required when thinning and pruning, as well as which citrus is to be left or removed. Only specified fruit is to be picked as instructed and desirable fruit should not be left on the tree. Cut and drag broken tree limbs from field. Remove any vines, suckers, shoots or debris that may deter the function or growth of trees. Workers must use care when picking, grading and packing not to damage or bruise fruit and to not to break limbs or leaves off of trees. Improper pruning can cause problems with fruit load, fruit size, disease severity, and overall production. Assist with Good Agricultural Practices policies. Apply pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Select, prepare, label, pull, stock, and load produce and containers for sales. Produce will be located, identified, selected and stacked onto shelves and into containers. Maintain inventory and remove old or defective produce. Carefully hand-level boxed fruit to assure an even level of fruit in each container. Remove excess fruit from overfilled boxes and placed carefully in separate containers as directed by supervisor. Repair bins and pallets used for fruit sales displays. Use extreme care while handling produce. Maintain clean work areas, free of safety hazards. Clean and maintain equipment and facilities.
Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job. Persons seeking employment in this position must be available for the entire period requested by the employer.
Employer may request, but not require, workers to work more than the stated daily hours and/or on a worker's Sabbath or federal holidays. Worker must report to work at designated time and place each day.
