- Physical labor is needed for farm activities involved in square bale hay and burley tobacco production which includes topping, cutting, loading, housing and stripping of burley tobacco. Alternative work can include the
following activities but not limited to : Picking up rocks, cleaning up dead trees, trimming around fence rows, maintaining buildings, weed eating, cleaning machinery or building, or the facilities related to the farm operation, this is also
physical employment for the production of burley tobacco which includes cutting, housing and stripping of burley tobacco. The worker is required to cut and spike no less than an average of 100 sticks
per hour each hour, per employee, during the cutting process. They are required to strip at least 45 sticks an hour average during the stripping process. Work in the fields can begin early in the morning
when the leaves are wet with dew and the work will continue all day long even in weather conditions that can be as hot as over 100 degrees. Workers are required to be physically fit and able to perform
the duties while standing, bending, stooping, walking and lifting sticks of tobacco, that weigh up to 80 pounds, all day long and while standing on rails that can be as high as forty feet from the ground on
tiers four feet wide and six feet high. The worker is required to cut and spike no less than an average of 100 sticks, six plants per stick, per hour each hour during the cutting process. All the time care
must be exercised to prevent bruising and breaking of the tobacco plant and leaves. Care must be exercised in using the tobacco knife, spear and while climbing and standing on the rails. The workers
are required to remove the sticks of tobacco from the tiers book the tobacco which means to place them in a way for the leaves to stay in case, strip 45 sticks per hour in the stripping process, which
includes: removing the leaves from the stalks, grading the leaves into four grades and all the time keeping all non tobacco related items and other foreign matter out of the bale of tobacco. The small
square bales of hay can weigh as much as 75 pounds and have to be stacked in barns that the stacks are as high as 20 feet from the ground. L&R Calvert Farms LLC is involved in the cutting, housing
and stripping of tobacco and other farm related work on his property in Washington and Nelson County, Kentucky. L&R Calvert Farms LLC will make daily individual work assignments, crew assignments and
location of work as the needs of the operation dictate. Land is owned or leased but controlled by L&R Calvert Farms LLC. Other work will be available during the slow part of the season which may
include mowing the grass, weed eat around buildings and other repairs and maintenance of any property that is owned or leased by L&R Calvert Farms LLC. L&R Calvert Farms LLC will make daily
individual work assignments, crew assignments and location of work as the needs of the operation dictate. Workers may be assigned a variety of duties in any given day and different task on different days only on land either owned, leased but controlled by Calvert Farms. Steady and reliable attendance is a required must to each aspect of this job.
