- Our Farm/Ranch is seasonal. On the farming side, we plant and harvest corn, we plant cover crop used for fall grazing, we also bale brome grasses and alfalfa. The months March 1 through December 31 is seasonal for us because in March, we begin to buy calves that will later be put on grass during the warmer, summer months. Until then, they need to be fed, processed, health monitored, fencing upkept, and water sources kept open in the lot from March until they are turned out to pasture. While they are in the pasture for the summer/fall months, they need to be monitored daily for health, condition of the grass in each of the pastures, maintenance of the fences surrounding each pasture, putting salt and mineral blocks out as needed through the summer, putting fly control supplements out during the summer to the cattle on grass, and making sure water sources are kept open and available at all times, and grazing rotations. We also start calving in March. Cows and heifers need to be monitored for calving problems and be assisted as needed. They need to be fed while calving, herd health watched, barns kept clean with clean bedding and adequate fencing for each cow/calf pair, vaccinating and tagging each calf as it is born for identification purposes. Calving usually goes from March through end of May. In May the ground is prepped for corn planting, planting occurs, and the cow/calf pairs are turned out to pasture. They require the same daily maintenance as the feeder cattle that are out on grass. they need to be monitored daily for health, condition of the grass in each of the pastures, maintenance of the fences surrounding each pasture, putting salt and mineral blocks out as needed through the summer, putting fly control supplements out during the summer to the cattle on grass, and making sure water sources are kept open and available at all times, and grazing rotations. Starting in June we will begin to artificially inseminate our cows/heifers. This requires heat detection of each female, feeding and nutrition and recording who is in heat and which female needs to be AI'd and when. Along with normal daily animal health checks. June also begins our haying season when we bale the brome grass and alfalfa. June also includes rotation of cattle on grass from different pasture cells and all other summer grazing duties. July & August continues with the cattle that are out on grass, feeders and cow/calf pairs. These months also require checking on the health of the corn. In the fall all of the cattle come back into the lot for feeding. The calves have to be sorted off of the cows for weaning and fall vaccinations. The cleanup bulls (used to breed any cows that were missed during AI'ing) will be sorted off and fed separate. The yearling cattle are now fed in the lot until selling, which is usually spaced out from September through December depending on feed supply and market conditions. During that time the normal daily activities of caring for livestock press on. They need to be monitored daily for health, feeding, maintenance of the fences surrounding each pen, making sure water sources are kept open and available at all times, and pen rotations.
