Job Duties:
The farm worker position includes duties associated with the harvesting and packing of watermelons. This work can require standing, walking, stooping, bending, and lifting up to 60 pounds for long periods of time outdoors in all weather conditions. It also includes making important decisions based on size, coloring, and ripeness according to prescribed standards. This work requires adherence to important food safety and quality standard operating procedures and the ability to work quickly and consistently alongside fellow workers with a positive, professional, team-based attitude and a consideration for the safety and health of fellow workers and of the consumers who will purchase and consume the fresh produce grown, harvested, packed, and shipped from the farm. Duties may include tilling soil, applying fertilizers, transplanting, pulling weeds, raking, cleaning around shed area, thinning/pruning crops, applying pesticides, cleaning, grading, & packing harvested product. Watermelon: Perform manual labor to hand cut & pack watermelons. Use hand tools such as shears and knives. Duties also include cleaning, loading, & unloading harvested products. Grade & sort products according to factors such as color, species, length, width, appearance, feel, & quality to ensure correct processing & usage. Discard inferior/defective products estimate their weight, visually/by feel. Place products in containers according to grade & mark grades on containers. Measure, weigh, & count products & materials. Examine & inspect containers, materials & products to ensure that packing specifications. Workers will be required to turn watermelon vines from drive rows, cut ripe melons, and harvest the cut melons. Instruction will be given for each task and standards of performance communicated to worker. Workers will be assigned a row or series of rows and required to select and pick produce according to criteria outlined and demonstrated by managers such as size, coloring, and ripeness. They will be responsible for in-field grading and discarding of poor quality, rotting, and/or over-ripened produce. Workers will gently load the good quality produce into containers, taking care to avoid damage or bruising. Workers will unload containers/buses/wagons(trailers) at the packing shed and place fruit onto a conveyer belt to grade and then pack the fruit into boxes. Workers visually grade harvested produce and remove culls. Workers need to use both hands while grading at all times. Workers pack the graded produce in appropriate containers by hand. Filled boxes and cartons are stacked carefully by prescribed pattern and height onto pallets and secured by netting or tape. Workers may also be required to remove old or damaged plastic and irrigation drip tape along with any other trash, rocks or debris from the planting areas. Workers will assist in preparation of field areas prior to installation of new plastic and drip tape. Workers will also be responsible for irrigation installation, shovel work, weed pulling, hoeing and plastic installation to ensure the health of the crops. Workers may be required to operate farm vehicles and equipment such as trucks, tractors, and forklifts. Workers will be instructed in the safety and operation of the vehicle/equipment before operating. All vehicles should be driven in a manner to protect workers, harvested produce, in-field crops, and equipment. Operators should ensure all equipment is functioning correctly before operating. The use of all necessary PPE and safety equipment including wearing of seatbelt at all times when operating farm equipment is mandatory. Workers may assist with the repair, service, & maintenance of farm equipment including the prep, cleaning, lubrication, assembly, inspection, and dismantling of equipment parts.

Applicants must be 18 years or older. Person seeking employment as a farm laborer must be available for the entire period requested by the employer and possess 3 months experience hand harvesting produce. Perform prolonged bending reaching and lifting to 60lbs. All tools, equipment and supplies will be provided at no cost to workers. Work in extreme weather conditions in outdoor agricultural fields and involves exposure to sun, wind, rain, soil, mud, dust, heat, cold and other natural elements. Workers must be able to climb, stand, sit, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, bend (from waist), push, pull, reach, and lift. Workers must be able to withstand working in the direct sunlight and weather conditions ranging from hot and humid weather, moderate rain, and cold while performing their required job duties. Hours and days of work may vary due to weather conditions. Cell phone can only be used during breaks, emergencies, and to communicate with supervisor when needed.
