- Job Duties:
- Job duties include operating and maintaining a variety of farm equipment such as skid steers, loaders, and feeding machinery to support daily livestock and facility operations. Feeding tasks involve mixing and distributing rations based on livestock nutritional requirements, lifting and handling heavy bags of minerals and supplements, and moving hay bales manually or with equipment. Animals must have clean, consistent access to feed and water, and rations should be adjusted as needed based on health or seasonal conditions.
Livestock health must be monitored daily, with signs of illness or injury identified and addressed promptly. Medications and supplements are administered as needed, and support is provided during veterinary visits by gathering and restraining animals, preparing treatment areas, and recording health information. A livestock grazing program based on rye and pasture conditions is utilized to feed cattle during the warmer months. When rye is actively growing and available, livestock are grazed in pastures. Once rye is no longer accessible due to snow cover or poor conditions, livestock are moved into the feedlot for supplemental feeding. When rye begins to grow again in the spring, livestock are returned to pasture.
The role also involves inspecting, repairing, and installing barriers, gates, and enclosures to safely contain and manage livestock. This includes replacing broken rails, tightening or splicing wire, and ensuring enclosures are secure and properly maintained to prevent animal escape and protect pasture integrity.
Additional duties include cleaning and maintaining barns, pens, and handling areas; managing bedding and manure; and ensuring a clean, safe environment for animals. During the winter months or in periods of snow accumulation, the position includes snow removal responsibilities. This involves operating snow removal equipment to clear snow from feedlots, driveways, access roads, and equipment paths. Sand or salt may be applied to maintain safe walking and driving conditions around livestock areas and work zones. Timely snow removal is essential to prevent disruption in daily operations, particularly feeding and equipment access.
Tasks are physically demanding and require regularly lifting and carrying heavy items such as hay bales and mineral bags.
Daily duties may vary. The employer reserves the right to increase workers' pay or provide bonuses based on tenure, performance, or other factors that are solely based on the discretion of the employer.
