Job Description

Full Time:
Yes
Number of Workers Requested:
2
Job Duties:
Double N Farms is seeking seasonal workers to support our yearling stocker cattle operation, which runs from December through March. During this period, yearling cattle are received in December, processed, treated as needed, and fed in pens for approximately one week before being turned out to graze on wheat pastures. Seasonal employees will assist with various aspects of the operation, including the construction, movement, and maintenance of temporary electric fencing, as well as the setup and upkeep of portable water sources for the cattle. In the event of inclement weather or a shortage of forage, workers will help distribute hay to ensure the health and well-being of the herd. Additional responsibilities include monitoring cattle for signs of illness, assisting with treatment of sick animals, and helping with the movement and handling of cattle during receiving, pasture rotation, and shipping. As the grazing season concludes in March, cattle are sold once the pastures have been fully grazed, marking the end of the season and the need for seasonal help. Job duties include cleaning stalls, pens, and equipment using disinfectant solutions, brushes, shovels, water hoses, or pumps; driving trucks, tractors, and other equipment to distribute feed; and examining animals to detect illness, injury, disease, or changes in physical condition such as rate of weight gain. Workers will also feed and water livestock, monitor food and water supplies, and herd animals to pastures for grazing or to scales, trucks, or other enclosures. Responsibilities further include inspecting, maintaining, and repairing equipment, machinery, buildings, pens, yards, and fences; marking livestock to identify ownership and grade using brands, tags, paint, or tattoos; and mixing feed, additives, and medicines in prescribed portions. Employees may be required to move equipment, poultry, or livestock from one location to another manually or using trucks or carts. Patrolling grazing lands on horseback or all-terrain vehicles, shifting animals between grazing areas to ensure adequate access to food, and caring for animals and facilities are also part of the job. In addition, seasonal workers will build, move, and dismantle temporary single-wire electric fencing and must understand the basic operation of electric fencing and fence chargers. They will monitor electric float switches to ensure a constant water supply in temporary water sources, break ice in water sources during inclement weather, and maintain accurate head counts of cattle in each wheat pasture.
