Job Description

Full Time:
Yes
Number of Workers Requested:
2
Job Duties:
We operate a cow/calf operation in west-central North Dakota. Each year, we typically bring the cows in from pasture in November or December, depending on the weather. At that time, we wean calves, check cows for pregnancy, and provide vaccinations as needed. During the winter months, cows are fed at least once a day, and sometimes twice if necessary, until the pastures are ready in the spring. In April and May, we check and repair all pasture fences. Calving begins in May, when we assist with birthing as needed and record and tag all new calves. Branding takes place in June, followed by cutting, raking, and baling hay in June and July. From August through early September, cows are rotated to ungrazed pastures, and hay is hauled from the fields to the farmyard. From mid-September through November, the herd requires minimal care while grazing in pastures until they are brought back to the farmyard for winter. Job duties include feeding and watering livestock, monitoring food and water supplies, and examining animals for signs of illness, injury, or disease. Workers assist with calving, birthing, and tagging calves, as well as branding and vaccinating. Duties also include moving and herding cattle between pastures, pens, scales, or enclosures, either on horseback, with all-terrain vehicles, or by truck. Employees will clean and disinfect stalls, pens, and equipment, maintain and repair machinery, buildings, and fences, and keep accurate production and feeding records. Additional responsibilities involve mixing and distributing feed, marking cattle for identification, and administering medications or arranging veterinary care as needed. Workers also help with haying operations, including cutting, raking, baling, and hauling hay, and may be required to pick up and deliver feed from the elevator or feed mill to the farm. Employer may provide pay increases for performance, longevity and/or experience at employer’s discretion. Employer may provide performance bonuses at the end of the contract at the employer’s discretion.
