Job Duties:
Workers will perform various duties associated with the operation of sheep operation. The Livestock Worker will assist with all aspects of sheep production, including daily care, feeding, breeding, lambing, and preparation of livestock for sale. Work is performed under the direction of the farm owner or manager and requires attention to animal health, safe handling practices, and seasonal production demands. Key responsibilities include: • Operating Tractors: Safely and efficiently operate various farm tractors for tasks such as hay baling, feed distribution, and field preparation. • Feeding Sheep: Responsible for the daily feeding and watering of sheep, ensuring they receive appropriate nutrition and monitoring their health and well-being during feeding times. This includes preparing feed and distributing it across different pens or grazing areas. • Rounding up/Herding: Utilize traditional and modern techniques to gather and move sheep between pastures, pens, or for sorting and treatment. This requires patience and an understanding of sheep behavior. • Assisting with Maintaining Sheep Grazing Fields: Work alongside the team to keep grazing fields clear of debris, such as rocks, fallen branches, and other hazards. This also involves removing undesirable vegetation to ensure healthy pasture growth. Workers may apply chemicals approved by EPA, OSHA, & WPS as necessary. Workers should not have any allergies to noxious plants or approved insect control sprays. Workers may be required to remove animal waste. • Repairing fencing: Regularly inspect and repair farm fences as needed, including barbed wire, electric, and woven wire, to ensure the security and containment of the sheep. This may involve replacing posts, tightening wires, and clearing overgrown vegetation around fences. • Counting and Sorting Animals: Accurately count and sort sheep for various purposes, including health checks, breeding groups, and market preparation. This requires attention to detail and the ability to handle animals calmly. • Assist with breeding activities: monitoring ewes, preparing rams, and maintaining breeding records. Assist with lambing, including care of newborn lambs, bottle-feeding when needed, tagging, docking, and vaccination. The job involves: stooping, lifting and working outside in various weather conditions including inclement weather and outdoor temperatures below 30 to in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, ability to work long hours, including weekends and holidays, especially during peak season. Prior experience with livestock, particularly sheep, is highly desirable. Workers should have experience operating farm machinery, especially tractors and a strong work ethic and a commitment to animal welfare. Workers should have the ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods. Workers should have excellent communication and teamwork skills. Smoking and the use of tobacco products is prohibited during working time. All workers must report to work clean and in clean clothes. Shirts will be provided by the employer. Must commit to work entire contract period. Workers will be expected to perform any of the listed duties and work on tasks as assigned by the employer and/or worker’s supervisor. If an updated AEWR for the occupational classification and geographic area is published in the Federal Register during the work contract, and the updated AEWR is lower than the rate guaranteed on the job order, the employer must continue to pay at least the rate guaranteed on the job order.
