- Job Duties:
- Our operation is seasonal in nature. We put up a significant amount of hay, which is a seasonal activity, and we farm corn, soybeans, milo, and wheat, all of which are produced during the growing and harvest season. While cattle make up a smaller portion of the overall operation, they also require increased labor during specific times of the year. All primary farming and livestock activities occur between April and December. Breeding and calving are seasonal practices, as all cows are artificially inseminated during a defined period to tighten the calving season. Livestock are rotationally grazed during the spring and summer months, and year-round cattle care is not required. Job duties include preparing fields for planting; attaching farm implements such as plows, discs, sprayers, or harvesters to tractors using bolts and hand tools; and operating tractors, planters, sprayers, seed drills, manure spreaders, combines, irrigation equipment, and other farm machinery. Employees will engage in planting, cultivating, weeding, spraying, and harvesting activities; manipulate controls to set, activate, and adjust equipment mechanisms; observe and listen to machinery during operation to detect malfunctions; drive farm semi-trucks to haul crops, supplies, and tools; inspect, adjust, and complete routine maintenance and repairs on equipment; and record required agricultural data. Livestock-related duties performed seasonally include feeding and watering livestock (while cattle are confined for calving); monitoring food and water supplies during confinement period; mixing and distributing feed, additives, and medications using trucks, tractors, or other equipment; examining animals for signs of illness, injury, disease, or abnormal weight gain; assisting with animal reproduction activities including breeding, artificial insemination, and calving; herding livestock between pastures, enclosures, scales, or trucks; rotating animals between grazing areas to ensure adequate forage; patrolling grazing lands using horseback or ATVs; moving livestock and equipment between locations; cleaning stalls, pens, and equipment using appropriate tools and disinfectants; and inspecting, maintaining, and repairing livestock equipment, pens, yards, fences, and farm buildings.
