Job Duties:

The job specifications involve skilled farm labor for the purpose of growing a potato crop, harvesting the potatoes, and operating and work on potato production related equipment. Duties include: Monitoring the growth of the crop and reporting any issues. Observe field conditions, including presence of weeds, insects and disease. Perform petiole sampling and other basic crop scouting, and yield monitoring activities. Report information to agronomist or supervisor. Set up, operate, monitor & maintain irrigation system. Monitor field soil moisture levels, record findings. Perform basic maintenance and repairs on all on farm equipment, including irrigation units and potato conveyers. Operate a planter filler and other equipment associated with seed preparation and cutting. Set-up and perform basic maintenance on seed and planting equipment. Set up equipment to be used for harvesting and washline operations. Wash and disinfect potato equipment and trucks. Prepare site for harvest time operations. This includes installing washline and other potato handling equipment and conducting maintenance. During harvest, responsibilities include operating the potato piler, bobcat, potato harvester, wind rower and tractors. Organize the flow of potatoes on to the washline from the field trucks. Ensure varieties of potatoes are kept separate and communicate with co-workers regarding the variety of potatoes being unloaded. Disassemble and wash equipment at the conclusion of harvest. Other duties include performing general basic maintenance and welding as needed on farm equipment. Working on tillage equipment, including disks, chisel plows and tractors. Hooking up implements to the tractors. Responsibilities also include conducting basic repairs and maintenance on potato handling equipment and harvesters. During harvest, responsibilities include operating the potato piler, bobcat, potato harvester, wind rower and tractors. Other duties include performing general basic maintenance and welding as needed on potato equipment. General farm work is also included. Full time supervision is provided and all tools are provided at no cost. Workers must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time and work in extreme temperatures. Lifting objects up to 50 lbs., bending, twisting, and stooping regularly will be required. Participate in required health and safety training

Special Requirements:

3 months experience operating and performing maintenance on agriculture equipment. 3 months experience working with potatoes. Repetitive movements, extensive pushing and pulling, extensive walking, standing, bending and stooping will be required. A standard type drivers license is required or must be able to be obtained upon hire. Work may be required outdoors when temperatures can vary from very hot to very cold. Due to the complexity of the weather and field conditions, workers may be requested to work longer than 8 hours per day, as well as Saturdays, Sundays, and/or Federal holidays. This is dependent on field conditions, potato seed availability, and potato growing conditions, and field conditions during harvest. Therefore, hours above 40 hours per week may be offered, but not guaranteed, and are voluntary.
