Job Duties:
All applicants must be able, willing and qualified to perform the work described in the job order and must be available for the entire period of employment specified in Section A.3 & A.4. Workers may perform any combination of tasks related to; planting, cultivating, and maintaining nursery stock, trees, shrubs, bedding plants, plugs, liners, hanging baskets, and other horticultural varieties. Workers will assist in propagating plants from cuttings, plant and pot seedlings, fill and label trays, move products to and from greenhouse and help load and unload areas. Crimp wire baskets, attach hangers to baskets and hang throughout holding houses. Processing fruit and vegetable crops; preparing soil, planting, pruning, weeding, thinning, spraying, irrigating, mowing, harvesting, grading, water, sorting and storing plants by variety. Workers will maintain/install irrigation systems and water lines, move and install irrigation pipes and equipment, dig and maintain ditches. Install and remove levee gates. Apply pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other crop protectants. Apply fertilizers, plant growth chemicals, conditions, and other plant related treatments at the correct times depending on plant type, growth, climate and crop condition. Workers may assist with farm building, field, and fence maintenance and repairs. Workers may use hand tools such as but not limited to: shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, hand saws, and knives. Workers must be able to operate agricultural equipment safely and in manner that protects operator, others, the employer’s products and property. Failure to comply with safety requirements may result in disciplinary action up to and including immediate termination. Work required in fields when plants are wet with dew and rain, and may be required during light rain, snow, moderate winds, direct sun, high humidity and extreme temperatures. Workers should report for work with their own suitable clothing, and wear assigned personal protective equipment when required. Workers wearing inappropriate clothing for work will NOT be permitted to start work. The work assigned will be physically demanding, walking, bending, stooping and kneeling for long periods of time will be required. Workers must be able to handle, lift, and carry 50 pounds frequently. Workers may be asked to operate trucks or other multi-purpose vehicles to transport workers from housing (whether on or off farm) to the farm properties; haul tools, supplies, or crops; transport workers from place to place around the farm properties during the workday (including on public roads to reach farmer's fields); and/or transport workers to the grocery store, bank, or laundry facilities on an as needed basis. Workers that are requested to drive will be required to possess a valid driver’s license; no worker will be rejected for not having a driver's license. Workers who do drive will still perform the same field work and other duties as non-driving workers; driving is not a primary duty. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect workers’ ability to perform job. Workers must be available to work 8.5-hour shifts within the hours of 7:00am - 7:00pm from Monday through Saturday. Workers will be given at least a 30-minute lunch break which is staggered between 11am - 1pm as decided by the workers. Workers may choose where to eat their lunch and return to work after their 30 minutes are up. The daily or weekly work schedules may vary due to weather, sunlight, temperature, crop conditions, and other factors. The employer will notify workers of any change to the schedule. The employer will provide 1 day of training and allow 2 days of work for the workers to satisfactorily perform duties described in this job description.
