Job Duties:
Job duties include operating and maintaining a variety of farm equipment to support livestock and hay operations. Equipment may include, but is not limited to, skid steers, loaders, pay loaders, balers, mergers, rakes, and feeding machinery. Workers will operate equipment to move hay and forage into hay yards for processing, produce hay products, and transport materials to feeding areas, storage, and to market. Employees will also be responsible for loading and driving farm trucks as needed. Workers will assist with all aspects of livestock care, including supporting calving of cows and bred heifers by monitoring for signs of labor, assisting during delivery, and providing postnatal care. Newborn calves may need to be lifted and carried to designated areas for treatment. Duties also include weaning calves, monitoring their health and behavior, and ensuring proper nutrition throughout the transition. Employees will move and handle livestock in accordance with rotational grazing practices, including relocating cattle between pastures, monitoring animals during movement, and ensuring access to adequate water and forage. Additional responsibilities include installing, repairing, maintaining, and removing fencing, including electric fencing systems, as well as maintaining gates and livestock containment areas. Feeding duties include mixing and distributing rations, handling and lifting heavy bags of minerals and supplements, and moving hay bales manually or with equipment. Workers must ensure livestock have consistent access to feed and water, adjust rations as needed, and monitor animal health daily. Employees will identify and respond to signs of illness or injury, administer medications and supplements, and assist with veterinary visits by gathering and restraining animals and maintaining health records. Additional tasks include implementing fly and pest control measures, cleaning and maintaining barns, pens, and work areas, managing bedding and manure, and ensuring a clean and safe environment for livestock. Workers will also perform general manual labor such as sweeping work areas, spreading hay and straw, throwing straps, rolling tarps, removing net wrap or plastic from bales, and clearing snow when necessary. Workers will be responsible for removing snow and ice from livestock facilities and operational areas to ensure safe and continuous access to feed, water, and shelter during winter conditions. Duties include clearing snow and ice from barns, pens, feeding areas, walkways, gates, and access routes using manual tools and equipment as needed. Employees will regularly inspect and remove ice buildup from water troughs, tanks, and other livestock watering systems to ensure animals have uninterrupted access to clean, unfrozen water. Workers must monitor weather conditions and perform snow and ice removal as necessary throughout the day, including during active snowfall or freezing temperatures, to maintain safe working conditions and proper livestock care. Routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and basic mechanical repairs on equipment, buildings, and infrastructure are required. This position is physically demanding and requires regularly lifting and carrying heavy items such as hay bales, mineral bags, and newborn calves. There are few typical days and workers may be required to change duties and/or locations often and engage in various general functions. Daily duties may vary depending on crop, weather, and field conditions.
