Job Duties:
Crops: Bedding Plants, Annuals, Perennials, Succulents, House Plants, Hanging Baskets, Patio Pots, Vegetables, Herbs, Accents, Fall Mums, Pansies, and Landscape Trays. Workers may perform any combination of the following duties concerned with preparing soil and growth media, cultivation, and otherwise participating in horticultural activities: haul, spread, dig, rake, and mix media to prepare the growing areas for production; cover and fill cold frames and greenhouses in preparation for planting; haul, plant, spray, weed, water, prune, trim, shape and space products; fertilize with granular or liquid fertilizer; tie, bunch, wrap, and pack trees and shrubs to fill orders and load onto trucks for marketing; in a greenhouse, or in an outdoor production area transplanting seedlings and liners into containers and place in growing area. Production- Operating automated planting equipment and planting lines. Filling flats, pots, and baskets with potting soil and growing media in preparation for planting. Planting plugs, seedlings, and transplants into flats and containers as instructed by supervisor. Tagging and properly labeling plants with appropriate picture tags during the planting process. Stacking and transporting filled flats to growing areas. Pinching and pruning crops as directed. Propagation and liners work including sticking cuttings or planting plugs or seedlings into flats as instructed by supervisor. Crop Care- Watering plants by hand using pumps and hoses. Applying fertilizer with granular or liquid fertilizer. Spacing plants in the greenhouse for proper growth. Trimming plants to shape. General monitoring of plant health. Completed containers will be watered and placed in growing area for finishing. Workers may be required to place watering tubes into containers to facilitate the irrigation process. Workers may be assigned to apply basic pesticides, including herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides, as directed by management. Shipping/Order Fulfillment - Learning and identifying plant product names. Pulling and staging orders on shipping carts for delivery. Operating a forklift. Loading and unloading plants and materials. Installing hangers and tags on pots and baskets. Orders must be pulled accurately with the correct number of plants requested, or with proper substitutions as directed by management. This is a very demanding and competitive business in which quality specifications must be rigorously adhered to. Sloppy work cannot and will not be tolerated. Errors in order fulfillment are not acceptable. Greenhouse Maintenance - Repairing water lines. Installing or replacing greenhouse plastic covering. Providing winter protection for structures and crops. Opening and closing greenhouse vents and structures as weather conditions require. Cleaning work areas. Transporting plant materials within the greenhouse operation. Nursery Operation - Workers may be required to operate pick-up trucks, golf carts, forklift, tractors, and other nursery equipment during daily operations as an incidental activity. Before any worker is required to operate any farm equipment, workers will be instructed in the safety and operation of the equipment before operating it. Equipment should be operated in a manner to protect the operator, other workers, products, plants, crops, and equipment. Repeated failure to obey safety requirements and operating instructions may result in termination. Working team leaders will assist with inventory counts, sow seeds, operate seeding equipment, maintain production planting schedule and assist with growth regulator and pesticide applications. These workers with proper licenses will use company vehicles to transport employers’ crops, tools and fellow workers

Special Requirements:
All applicants must have at least 2 months working in a commercial nursery. Applicants must be able to furnish affirmative job references from recent employers. Must be physically able to meet and perform all job specifications stated in job order. Must be able to work in the hot humid weather for extended periods of time. Workers are subject to random drug testing post hire at no cost to the employee. Failing or refusing a drug test will result in immediate termination.
