Job Duties:

Shovel snow; spread salt, sand and magnesium chloride; operate snow blowers. When there is no new snow, the job duties of the snow removal laborers include operating snow removal equipment to haul snow from temporary holding areas that become full to permanent holding areas and operating snow removal equipment to widen roads that have been narrowed by snowfall. In addition, the job duties of spreading salt, sand, and magnesium chloride may be performed when there is no new snow. Each of these job duties are performed when required by conditions and employers are unable to predict the dates and times when conditions will require that snow be removed from temporary holding areas, roads will need to be widened, and salt, sand and magnesium chloride need to be applied. The varying conditions include the amount of snow in inches, which affects the volume of snow that can be removed and held in temporary holding areas; the density of the snow, i.e. light fluffy snow vs. wet heavy snow, which affects how much volume can be handled by the various snow types of snow removal equipment and the scheduling of snow removal operations; temperature, which affects the rate at which snow will melt or become ice and accordingly affects the scheduling of snow removal operations; volume of traffic on roads which may increase or decrease due to accidents and the other variable factors discussed, which affects scheduling of snow removal operations; the date, time and rate of snowfall, which affect scheduling of snow removal operations; and rate, direction, and times of wind, which affects snow drifts based on the direction and wind speed in conjunction with the terrain and accordingly, affects scheduling of snow removal operations. Each of these variables can change by the hour and affect the scheduling of snow removal operations.
