Job Duties:
Temporary Crab Vessel Deckhands needed from November 2, 2021, to May 7, 2022. Deckhands will assist other crewmembers in a rotative fashion while fishing for crabs using traps/pots made of plastic, and/or other synthetic materials. At the beginning of the season, will load traps and bait into the vessel; tie market float to the line, attach the line to trap; fasten bait inside trap, and lower trap into the water using a hydraulic winch, once loading trap onboard the vessel, deckhand #1 slides from the trap and places it on a conveyor to deckhand #2 who pressure-washes trap using a water hose and removes traps lid. Deckhand #2 takes out only legal-size crab from the trap and places it on a live well or container and breaks off only legal-size claws from the crab. Will toss illegal, undersized, and de-clawed crabs overboard. If a trap requires minor repairs, deckhands will repair it on the spot in a manner that does not slow the overall fishing operation. If major repairs are needed, deckhands will set the trap/pot aside and bring it to the dock to be repaired. Deckhands will also secure and remove the vessel's docking lines to and from docks and other vessels. Will put anchors or tow equipment using a hydraulic winch. At the end of the season, deckhands will load traps on vessels and unload them onto the dock by hand or using hoisting equipment. The deckhand will wash the deck, traps, and conveyors using water hoses and assist the captain as required. Must be able to repeatedly lift, slide and/or stack traps/pots weighing from 30 to 75 pounds up to two (2) meters high. Deckhands will convene very early in the morning to be taken to predetermined fishing grounds where traps/pots were dropped at the beginning of the season. Must be willing to work in humid and/or wet conditions within confined spaces. 40 basic hours of work per week. Workers will be paid by check every week or according to the prevailing practice in the area of intended employment East side of the Gulf of Mexico along the Florida Coast whichever is more frequent. Employer will make all deductions from the worker's check as required and allowed by law. Employer will use a single workweek as its standard for computing wages due. Advances, pay, and deductions will be reflected in the Statement of Catch given with the check. No education required. No on-the-job training. Applicant MUST HAVE no less than one continuous month of experience as a crab vessel deckhand on a commercial vessel engaged in fishing for crab. The usual work period is from 06:00 am to 3:00 pm. Employer provides safety gear, tools, supplies, and equipment required to perform the assigned duties as well as food and lodging on the vessel free of charge or deposit.
