- Successful applicants will become proficient at interpreting blueprints and drawings to determine specifications and materials required for job, calculating angles, and determine vertical and horizontal alignment courses, and measuring distance from reference points and mark guidelines to lay out work. They will examine structures and determine need for repair, remove damaged brick or mortar using sledgehammers, crowbars, chipping gun or chisel. Applicants will use plumb bobs, levels, laser levels, trowels, hammers, power saws, and other tools and equipment to break or cut, lay, and align bricks, tiles or blocks to size to build or repair structures. They will use wire clamps, anchor holes, torch, or cement to fasten material to structure. Position requires construction of corners by fastening in plumb position a corner pole or building a corner pyramid of bricks, and filling in between the corners using a line from corner to corner to guide each course or layer of brick or block. Applicants will mix sand, clay, dirt, grout or mortar material and will apply and smooth mixture over work surface. Applicants will grout block, remove excess mortar, and finish mortar joints with jointing tools for a sealed, uniform appearance, and will clean working surfaces using broom, wire brush, or scraper.
