Job Duties:
Our Fireplace and Chimney Masons work with Historic Chimneys and Fireplaces for Pre-War Era Buildings including Brownstones, Townhouses, and Carriage Houses. The Fireplace & Chimney Mason will be expected to lay and bind building materials, such as common brick, firebrick, decorative tile, structural tile, concrete block, cinder block, glass block, and terra-cotta block, with mortar, high temperature mortar, fireclay mortar, and other substances, to construct, restore, and/or repair fireplaces, chimneys, fireplace, walls, and other related structures. Specific job duties include, but are not limited to: 1. Restoration of Historic Pre-War Fireplaces, Chimneys, tile/marble surrounds, hearth extensions, and marble and/or stone Mantles 2. Repair and/or rebuilding of Pre-War marble/stone mantles 3. Removal of Pre-War marble/stone mantles to be refurbished, repaired, and when all rough work completed reinstalled 4. Build custom refractory brick fireboxes: herringbone pattern, split running bond, roman split bond, and chevron pattern 5. Install slate/marble/granite hearths and/or hearth extensions 6. Repair, restore, and/or build historic Landmark Commission approved chimneys and/or roof chimneys 7. Repair/restore/replace historic artistic brick masonry, refractory brick fireboxes, smoke tight smoke chambers, and cast iron dampers 8. Perform inspections of existing pre-war fireplaces & chimneys 9. Lay brick/build chimneys 10. Tuckpointing, acid wash, tarp roofs 11. Pour concrete and/or cast in place crowns 12. Load/unload truck each day 13. Clean up the job site 14. Set-up and tear down safety equipment 15. Misc. duties as assigned Services to include: Artistic masonry, Historic masonry, Landmark Commission approved masonry; brick pointing, all types of brickwork, chimney crowns, chimney masonry, chimney construction, hand mixed cement and poured concrete, refractory firebrick, heating cement, high temperature smoke chamber cement, tight mortar joints, herringbone designs, (marble, stone, slate, limestone, timber, wood, wooden and custom) fireplace mantles. Familiarity and ability to work with different materials such as pre-war historic marble and/or stone mantels, pre-war historic wood mantles, custom built firewood log storage, mantel cabinets, Historic restoration of cast-iron inserts, fireplace dampers, chimney dampers, direct vent, gas fireplaces, wood-burning fireplaces, brick-oven construction and maintenance, venting and ventilation, fresh-air intakes, chimney flashing, chimney caps, gut-renovations, historical fireplace and chimney restoration, chimney repair, heating-ventilating and air conditioning (H.V.A.C).

1 year of previous Masonry experience Brick/Block/Stone Laying and Stucco Artistic Masonry Tile Installation Experience with masonry tools Measure materials or objects for installation or assembly Install masonry materials and apply mortar Implement and follow safety equipment and procedures on job site Direct work on job sites Apply and smooth mortar or other mixture over work surface Break or cut bricks, tiles, or blocks to size, using trowel edge, hammer, or power saw Neat finished masonry work Clean finished look mortar joints Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures Trunk Strength, manual dexterity, arm-hand steadiness, extent flexibility Handling and Moving Objects Inspecting Equipment, Structures, or Materials Communicate with Supervisors and Peers
