Job Duties:
Manual itinerant work machine planting, thinning tree seedlings, applying insecticides and herbicides using equipment, removing brush and vegetation, and seedling pulling to reforest and maintain timberlands. Use equipment in planting and thinning trees, spreading or spraying chemicals, preparing sites for planting, or performing other forestry services. Operate a rubber-tired or crawler-type tractor or other heavy motorized equipment such as a grader, front-end loader, or backhoe. Lubricate equipment, fuel equipment, adjust equipment and make emergency repairs to equipment. Sow seeds, raise and transport seedlings in a tree bag, and discard substandard seedlings. Use a chainsaw, brush blade, or other hand-held equipment to remove excess trees and other vegetation. Determine which immature trees to leave for accelerated growth, depending on spacing, species, size, freedom from disease or other defect, and possible damage to remaining trees. Combat insects, pests, and diseases harmful to trees. Use a backpack sprayer or other hand held tools to spray or inject vegetation with insecticides to kill insects and to protect against disease, and with herbicides to reduce competing vegetation. May chip debris and move slash (wood debris) away from roads, fire trails and remaining trees. Excludes workers cutting mature trees. May plant tree seedlings by hand in specified pattern using mattock, planting hoe or dibble bar in case of mechanical failure. Confer with other workers to discuss issues such as safety. Workers who apply for and obtain an FLC or FLC employee certificate of registration with driving authorization by the USDOL Wage and Hour Division during the employment period may transport workers, count and check, and may be offered additional work hours. These jobs involve propagating, protecting, and managing forest tracts. Drug free workplace. Drug testing may be conducted throughout the employment period at no cost to the worker.

No education or experience required. Must be 18 years or older. Must lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Work is outdoors in extreme temperatures and adverse weather. Requires physical stamina. Extensive walking over rough terrain. Production standard of 8,000 seedlings mechanically planted per 8 hr day after one week of on the job training. Work schedule and locations dependent on weather conditions. Must pass drug screenings. Overnight travel required.
