Masons will lay bricks, concrete blocks, or stones to construct or repair walls, buildings, and structures. They will mix and apply mortar or cement using appropriate ratios and techniques, measure and cut masonry materials to fit project specifications, and align masonry work with plumb lines, levels, and building plans. Masons will also create decorative patterns and designs with masonry materials such as stones, tiles, bricks, and concrete blocks, install and repair masonry veneers and facades, waterproof and seal masonry surfaces to protect against weather and moisture, and repair and replace damaged or deteriorated masonry components. Workers may also install and maintain expansion joints and control joints in masonry work and interpret and follow blueprints, drawings, and construction specifications. They must be able to operate and maintain masonry tools and equipment, such as trowels, saws, and mixers, adhere to safety guidelines and use personal protective equipment, and maintain a clean and organized work area. Must be able to collaborate with other construction professionals, including architects and project managers, understand materials and labor requirements for masonry projects, ensure compliance with local building codes and regulations, and document work progress and materials used for record-keeping.
