Job Duties:
Manual itinerant work to plant tree seedlings by hand and/or machine. Perform pre-commercial thinning, apply fertilizers and repellents, and operate machinery to reforest and maintain timberlands. Plant bare-root or containerized trees in a specified pattern using a mattock, dibble bar, hoedad or shovel. Dig holes at predetermined intervals and insert seedling. Tamp soil around plant with foot and planting tool. Select optimum planting location to meet spacing, soil, and shade requirements. Bare soil. Use a brush blade, or other hand held equipment including chemical applicators to spray or inject vegetation with premixed insecticides to kill insects or to protect against disease or with premixed herbicides to reduce competing vegetation. Apply repellent or fertilizer to seedlings. Minor activities include the following: Nursery activities, select or cut trees according to markings or sizes, types, or grades, thin and space trees using power saws; mark and maintain boundary lines; and sort tree seedlings, discarding substandard seedlings, according to standard charts or verbal instructions, perform utility right of way spraying. Confer with other workers to discuss issues such as safety, cutting heights or work needs. These jobs involve propagating, protecting, and managing forest tracts. Workers who apply for and obtain a FLC or FLCE certificate of registration with driving authorized by the USDOL Wage and Hour Division during the employment period may transport workers, count and check and may be offered additional work hours. Upon suspicion drug testing is conducted post-hire at the employer's expense and is not part of the interview process. Drug testing will be carried out equally between U.S. workers and H-2B workers at employer's expense. Employer may pay a piece rate of $20.00 - $100.00 per 1000 trees hand planted correctly or $10.00 - $100.00 per 1000 trees mechanically planted correctly, or the NPWC issued prevailing wage for the area of employment, whichever is greater. Raises and/or bonuses may be offered based on individual factors including work performance, skill, and tenure.

No education or experience required. Must be 18 years or older. Requires physical stamina. Extensive walking over rough terrain. Work is outdoors in extreme temperatures and adverse weather. Must lift and carry 50 lbs. Work schedule and locations dependent on weather conditions. Must pass drug screenings. Overnight travel required. Production standard of 2000 tree seedlings hand planted correctly per eight hour day after one week of on the job training. Production standard of 8,000 seedlings mechanically planted per 8 hr day after one week of on the job training. Employer may offer more than the stated work hours depending on weather, business needs, and other conditions. Extreme heat, cold, rain, or drought may affect exact working hours.
