Job Duties:

Manual itinerant work hand planting tree seedlings, pre-commercial thinning, applying herbicides, pruning, and maintaining boundary lines to reforest and maintain timberlands. Sow seeds and raise and transport tree seedlings in a tree bag. Plant bare-root or containerized tree seedling using a shovel, hoe dad, dibble bar, or hoe. Dig holes at pre-determined intervals and insert seedling. Tamp soil around plant with foot and planting tool. Select optimum planting location to meet spacing, soil, and shade requirements. Bare soil. Worker may perform only part of the planting function such as bearing soil, operating auger, or tamping soil around plant. Identify diseased or undesirable trees, and remove them, using power saws or hand saws. Use a backpack sprayer or other hand held tools to spray or inject vegetation with insecticides to kill insects and to protect against disease and with herbicides to reduce competing vegetation. Thin and space trees, using power thinning saws. Mark boundary lines. Cut brush and other vegetation and may chip debris and move slash away from planting areas, roads, fire trails, and remaining trees (excludes workers cutting mature trees). Prune or shear tree tops and limbs to control growth and increase density and prune limbs of young trees to deter knot growth using handsaw, power saw and pruning tools or other hand held equipment. As minor activities gather pine straw, pull tree seedlings from nursery beds or tree rows and place tree seedlings in field trays, sort tree seedlings in forest or nursery, remove tree seedlings from field trays, discard substandard tree seedlings, apply repellent or fertilizer to tree seedlings, and confer with other workers to discuss issues such as safety. These jobs involve propagating, protecting, and managing forest tracts. Drug testing may be conducted throughout the employment period at no cost to the worker. Employer may pay piece rates of $30.00 - $35.00 per 1000 trees planted correctly, or the prevailing wage in the area of intended employment, whichever is higher.

No education or experience required. Must be 18 years or older. Requires physical stamina. Extensive walking over rough terrain. Work is in adverse weather. Must lift and carry 50 lbs. Production standard of 1875 trees correctly planted per 7.5 hour day after one week of on the job training. Work schedule and locations dependent on weather conditions. Must pass drug screenings. Employer may offer more than the stated work hours depending on weather, business needs, and other conditions. Extreme heat, cold, rain, or drought may affect exact working hours.
