Job Duties:
Manual itinerant work hand tree planting, pre-commercial thinning, and applying herbicides to reforest and maintain timberlands. Plant tree seedlings in specified pattern, using a shovel, mattock, planting hoe, or dibble bar. Transport trees in a tree bag. Dig holes at pre-determined intervals and insert seedling. Tamp soil around plant with foot and planting tool. Select optimum planting location to meet spacing, soil, and shade requirements. Bare soil. Use a chainsaw, brush blade, power thinning saws, or other hand-held equipment to remove, thin and space excess trees and other vegetation. Clear and cut brush and other vegetation from planting areas. Spray or inject trees, brush, and weeds with herbicides to combat insects, pests, and harmful diseases using hand or powered sprayers or tree injector tool. Cut out diseased, weak or undesirable trees, and as a minor activity prune or shear tree tops and limbs to control growth and increase density using handsaw, power saw and pruning tools or other hand held equipment. These jobs involve propagating, protecting, and managing forest tracts. Count and check. Employer may pay piece rate of $25.00 per acre planted correctly or prevailing wage in the area of intended employment, whichever is higher.

No education or experience required. Must be 18 years or older. Requires physical stamina. Extensive walking over rough terrain. Work is outdoors in extreme temperatures and adverse weather. Must lift and carry 50 lbs. Production Standard of 1750 trees correctly planted per 7 hour day after one week of on the job training. Work schedule and locations dependent on weather conditions. Overnight travel required. Employer may offer more than the stated work hours depending on weather, business needs, and other conditions. Extreme heat, cold, rain, or drought may affect exact working hours.
