Job Duties:
Workers will perform manual labor including harvesting, planting, staking, and tying tomato and bell pepper, as well as pruning, laying plastic, operating equipment, general farm labor, and field cleanup. The activities will be performed under extreme weather conditions and physical conditions including but not limited to prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.), and working in extremely hot and/or cold weather. Workers will perform assigned duties as instructed by their supervisor. Duties may vary from time to time. In order to perform this kind of work, the worker must be able to work outside for at least 7 hours a day in all kinds of weather and be in possession of the requisite physical strength and endurance to repeat the picking process rapidly, working quickly and skillfully with their hands. The first week of employment is considered as an introductory period of employment to acclimate the worker to the physical demands of the work, to familiarize workers with job specifications, and to demonstrate proper methods and specific issues. On the first work day, the employer will provide specific instructions in the proper way to perform the crop activity. Thereafter, the worker will be expected to perform the task with diligence as instructed. By the beginning of the second work week, workers will be expected to perform the work in a manner specified by the employer and described herein. The work requires adherence to important food safety and quality standard operating procedures. It also requires making important decisions based on size, coloring, and ripeness according to prescribed standards. Workers must possess the ability to work quickly and consistently and will be expected to conform to the specific instructions given for each day's work. Instructions and general supervision will be provided by the employer or by a designated employee. Work will be closely monitored and reviewed for quality. Daily individual work assignments and location of work will be determined by the employer or designated employee as the needs of the operation dictate. Workers may be assigned a variety of duties in any given day and different tasks on different days. Vegetable Harvesting: Workers will move down assigned row and pick according to size, shape, color, and maturity and place into bucket carefully so as not to bruise. Workers will be responsible for selecting produce according to criteria and discarding poor quality, rotting and/or over-ripened produce. When full, workers will carry bucket and empty into field bin or load onto trailer to be taken to packing shed or load onto mule train to be field packed. Workers will receive token or credit for bucket. The employer will provide the tools necessary to perform the described job duties without charge to the worker. The employer will charge the workers for reasonable costs related to the worker's refusal or negligent failure to return the tools or due to such worker's willful damage or destruction of the tools. Workers must adhere to all safety rules as instructed by the supervisor. The employer will comply with all federal, state, and local safety requirements. Employer is a drug-free workplace.
