Job Duties:
Pull weeds/chop: Workers will walk along rows as specified by employer and remove weeds and grass from fields by hand or using a hoe. Cultivate and harvest flue-cured tobacco and cotton. Load and unload flue-cured tobacco and cotton. May operate tractors, tractor-drawn machinery, or self-propelled machinery to plow, harrow, plant, cultivate, spray, fertilize and harvest field crops. Perform farm, field and shed sanitation duties. Mow grass and operate trimmer around farm buildings. May supervise other workers. May operate and perform minor maintenance on farm vehicles or Agricultural Equipment Operator: Operate tractors to prepare soil of planting, plant, cultivate, machine harvest and plow crops. Operate towed machines such as planters and sprayers to plant, fertilize, dust and spray crops. May operate forklift to load and unload harvested crops. Grade and sort cucumbers grown on the farm for shipment. Observe and listen to machinery operation to detect problems. Troubleshoot, repair and perform minor maintenance on farm vehicles and equipment. Drive farm trucks and tow farm trailers to haul farm related materials, supplies, and harvested crops to designated locations as directed by employer or supervisor. Though not a hiring requirement, if a worker drives a company vehicle during the period of employment then at the time of operating the company vehicle the driver must possess a valid driver’s license issued by a U.S. state or foreign equivalent and operate the company vehicle in accordance with the license restrictions and vehicle classifications applicable to that license. Workers will walk along rows as specified by employer and remove weeds and grass from fields by hand or using a hoe. Workers will cultivate by hand or with mechanical cultivator attached to farm tractor. May perform pre-harvest field activities such as laying plastic, planting, pruning, staking, hammering, tying, stuffing suckers, fixing stakes, covering and uncovering crops, irrigation and weeding. May perform post-harvest field activities such as pulling plastic, loading plastic into compactor, and field clean up. The use or possession or being under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol during working time is prohibited. Workers may be requested to submit to random drug or alcohol tests at no cost to the worker. Failure to comply with the request or testing positive may result in immediate termination. All testing will occur post-hire and is not a part of the interview process. Negative result may be required post-hire and before commencing work. Must be able to lift 75 lbs. to shoulder height repetitively throughout the workday. Requires minimum 3 months verifiable work experience operating 140+ h.p. tractors with farm implements. Basic literacy and mathematical ability required. Must commit to work entire contract period. Workers may be required to perform work that is incidental to farming the crops listed in the application. All other duties, if any assigned, will be those duties of Farm Worker, Diversified Crops, DOT code 407.687-010 (SOC (ONET/OES) code 45-2092.02). This is a very demanding and competitive business in which quality specifications must be rigorously adhered to. Sloppy work cannot and will not be tolerated. The worker understands that if he abandons his employment or is terminated for cause prior to the end of the anticipated period of employment, the worker will forfeit the ¾ guarantee and reimbursement of certain transportation costs. Excessive absences and/or tardiness cannot be tolerated and may result in termination. Daily individual work assignments, crew assignments, and location of work will be made by and at the sole discretion of the employer and/or worker’s supervisor. Workers may be assigned a variety of duties in any given day and/or different tasks on different days.
