Job Duties:
The main task will be harvesting coffee. Workers are required to hand pick ripe coffee, for no less than 80% of the total harvest, with a basket around the waist, weighting no less than 28 pounds (often called an "almud"). Skilled laborers should be able to pick over an "almud" in one hour. The majority of the workdays are spent on one's feet and performing constant movement outdoors. Workers are rarely in one place as they move from one field to another for any period of time. There may be tasks associated with preparatory or preharvest work which may include fertilizing, clearing or suprressing weeds, combating coffee berry borer and other pests among other cultivating practices. There may also be, post harvesting tasks such as pruning coffee trees, cleaning conservation ditches, milling, drying and packing coffee and replanting or reseting the trees. Additionally, workers may engage in activities related to harvesting and cultivating plantains and other crops while the ripening of the coffee progresses. Workers must be able to stand, walk uphill and downhill, sit, sloop, squat, kneel, crouch, bend (from the waist) push, pull, reach, lift and carry items weighting in the range of 5 to 60 pounds. The worker may be requested but not required to work overtime, and will be compensated as required by the applicable norms. The manager or supervisor will advise workers at the end of the workday if there is any change in start and time of anticipated schedule of work for the following day. Regular attendance by all workers during schedule hours of the workday and/or work period is required; unsatisfactory attendance, including reporting late, excessive request to leave before the end of the workday, quitting early, etc., may be cause for disciplanary action. Workers must call their manager or supervisor as far in advance possible prior to the start of the workday if they do not expect to be in on time.
